So you’re interested in joining the competition…We like that. Here’s what you need to know:
Who is eligible? All Texas State Interior Design Students.
Where do I sign up? At the first ASID/IIDA group meeting Wednesday, September 8 @5pm. In the large FCS lecture hall. or email secretary@txstateasid.com (Susan Seaborne) BEFORE the meeting, and tell her you’d like to be on a team.
Can I do this alone? No. Each piece will be designed and built by a group of 4-5 students. We can only fund 5 groups, so first come, first served.
What if I can’t make the meeting? If you cannot attend the meeting, email secretary@txstateasid.com (Susan Seaborne) BEFORE THE MEETING and tell her you’d like to be on a team. If you already have a full team, then have one representative send an email for the whole team. DO NOT sign up your friends without their consent.
How it’s all gonna go down:
At the first General Meeting, after signup, teams will be given a “random mix” of both furniture elements and finishing materials. They will also be given a $30 spending budget for any additional materials. Teams will have the time between the first meeting (Sept 8th), and the Kickoff Event (Sept 25th) to make a plan of attack on how to assemble and refinish their piece. Teams cannot spend more than $30 on needed materials, but are encouraged to “freecycle” anything that they may need in order to avoid additional purchases. This means you can raid your parent’s garages, cruise the resource room, and look through your dorm rooms and apartments for junk that could be repurposed. The only caveat we have is that no more than 50% of your total piece can be freecycled. Keep in mind that what you design doesn’t have to be furniture. If your team wants to make a lighting fixture, go for it. A wine rack? Go for it. Be creative!
No assembly or refinishing is allowed before the day of the Kickoff (Sept 25th). This time is meant for planning only. If, however you will need to use power tools to make cuts to wood (or whatever), just email Susan, and get it ok’ed. Since this event is being held on school property, we are not allowed to use power tools. The only exception will be a hand sander and a power drill, both of which will be provided. All necessary hand tools (chisels, hammers, screwdrivers, clamps, etc) will be provided by ASID. If you think you will need a tool that we cannot provide, email president@txstateasid.com (Rebecca Wilkins) and I’ll let you know.
All assembly and refinishing will take place on the day of the Kickoff. Teams will need to arrive and setup @9/9:30am (TBD), and at 10:00 the 4-hour timer will start. Teams will have until 2:00pm to complete their pieces, and once time’s up, it’s hands off! Susan will be available and working with the teams to help them if it’s needed. We will have several types of fasteners (nails, screws, etc) at the event for your use, but if you think you’re gonna get all crazy-go-nuts, it might be smart to bring your own. Just remember your budget!
Pieces will be judged by the wonderful staff of Threshold Furniture and Design Studio and various other ID staff and guests. We will be awarding a “Best in Show” award but remember, the point of this is to HAVE FUN!!! If your piece is a flop, don’t get mad or upset or embarrassed. It’s all for grins, and we still love you!
Just for some inspiration, Rebecca Wilkins and Andrea Hill spent this last weekend making an example piece. This took us 4 hours, and only cost $12. Just imagine what 4-5 of you could do with $30!
